♥WHEN YOUR MIL (mother-in-law) IS A CHEF, YOU EITHER GET NERVOUS OR GET COOKING.♥

Your entire house will seem to float with the aromas of spice and apples when you make this apple butter, a perfect cloudy day mission! Perfection with Beer Bread!
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cooking method: crock pot
Cooking temp: high
Cooking time: 3 hour
Quantity: 2 1/2 C.
♥PANTRY, FRIDGE, MARKET♥♥
5 large tart apples, such as Granny Smith
2/3 C. water
1 t. ground nutmeg
1 t. ground allspice
1 t. ground clove (or 10 whole cloves)
2 t. ground cinnamon (or 1 cinnamon sticks)
1 C. brown sugar, light or dark
1 t. pure vanilla extract
♥Prep
Peel and core apples; cut into quarters or chunks.
Put all ingredients in pot or crock pot and stir to coat apples with spices and sugar.
♥Cooking - crock pot
Cover with lid. Stir every now and then, mashing apples with back of a wooden spoon. Apple butter is ready when it is thick (like thick applesauce).
♥♥WAYS TO “just wing it”.♥♥ consider substituting
*sub: any apples or combo of types
*sub: granulated sugar for brown
*spices: any of those called for in recipe, but always use cinnamon
*sub: stove top method — this recipe can be made using a heavy bottom pot. It will take less time and will need more attention, i.e. start out at a medium temp, stirring every 20 minutes or so and lowering the burner temp as the butter thickens
♥ Helpful Hints♥
*if you want to slow down the crock pot process, cook on “low” heat — this works well if you have to leave the house for a few hours or want to cook overnight. It will take twice as long to cook on low heat.
*this apple butter is delicious on granola, oatmeal and about anything
*make a double batch; it will keep in your fridge for 1 month
